Vietnam vet Thomas Cleaver is Thorne Dreyer's guest on Rag Radio, discussing the famed Tonkin Gulf "incident" on the week of its 50th anniversary. Cleaver -- who was on the operational command over the two destroyers in the Gulf -- provides first-hand hand history based on his personal experience and that of others he communicated with.
Thomas McKelvey Cleaver is a native Texan, a journalist, and a produced screenwriter. He has written successful horror movies and articles about Second World War aviation, was a major fundraiser for Obama in 2008, and has been an activist on anti-war, political reform, and environmental issues for almost 50 years.
Cleaver recently wrote an article for The Rag Blog (http://www.theragblog.com/thomas-mckelvey-cleaver-tonkin-gulf-the-event-that-changed-my-life-forever/), reflecting on what he called the Tonkin Gulf "nonincident" that was used as a pretext to begin formal U.S. combat involvement in Vietnam. Tom was on the staff of the operational command over the destroyers USS Maddox and USS Turner Joy in early August 1964, and has substantial personal knowledge of the events on the Tonkin Gulf "that would send half a million of my fellow Americans into combat..." And, as a result, "The United States would nearly be torn asunder, its future changed irrevocably."
Rag Blog apprentice and Vietnam vet Ken Martin also participated in the discussion.
